Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic

Title: Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic, Dowser #1
Author: Meghan Ciana Doidge
Genre: Urban Fantasy (adult) (new adult)
Approx. 68,000 words

Synopsis

If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept — was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it. That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

Chapter Quotes
The customer looked familiar, like maybe he’d been in the bakery a few times before. The vampire, however, was new.” – Chapter One
“I didn’t wet my pants, but I was glad I hadn’t drunk anything all afternoon. Usually I was an eight-glasses-a-day sort of girl.” – Chapter One
“I was being stalked by an obviously insane vampire. It didn’t get much more terrifying than that.” – Chapter One

“I thought you weren’t going to bite me tonight.” I said, pleased that my voice sounded much calmer than my mind.
He tilted his head and gazed at my neck … actually at my carotid artery. My pulse sped up; I was surprised it could get any higher actually.
            “I wasn’t,” he murmured.
“Well, watching my blood move through my veins isn’t going to be helpful then.”  - Chapter Two

“You expect me to follow you out into the pre-dawn to meet some guy who has absolutely no authority over me? Ever heard of email or the phone?” – Jade, Chapter Six

“Maybe a vampire knowing where you lived was sort of like seeing the signature on your own death certificate.” – Chapter Seven

“I wasn’t pleased with my reaction to his touch — like he was a warm cashmere blanket and a cup of dark, hot chocolate rolled into one sexy, well-muscled, dangerous package.” – Chapter twelve
Review
I was given book for honest review. Half-witch Jade owns a bakery and I thought she was a riot. This was such a fun read for me. Her encounters with other paranormals as well as with her sister was highly entertaining. Looking forward to getting my hands on the next book in series. I will say I disagree with Jade on her universal truth, but would love to have recipes of all her cupcakes as Meghan Ciana Doidge made them sound so mouthwatering.
