April Angel Spotlight
A
Hero’s Pride
Kayla Santomas has never been on a blind date. Ever. One bad
marriage and way too many useless relationships have convinced her to allow her
best friend to set her up. Tired of dating frogs, she decides she wants dinner
with a nice guy as a birthday present to herself. Who knows? He might not be so
bad.
After losing part of his leg in Afghanistan, Ryan Mitchell lost interest in dating and even worse, the urge to get aroused. He finally gives into his badgering family and decides to go back into the dating world. What better way to do it than to allow his brother and friend to set him up? According to them, he needs the extra help.
Sparks fly between Kayla and Ryan. Each quickly realizes that they
want more time with the other. Hours rush past them in a blur. But when Ryan
says something that Kayla misinterprets, will this be the end of a great night?
Ryan will have to forget his pride and say what's inside in order to keep her.
Excerpt
Ryan Mitchell sat on his bed with a huff. He was sweaty and
tired, and he needed a shower. His prosthetic had been the only thing on his
mind, until now. For the past few days all he could think of was the blind date
coming up tomorrow. He stripped off his clothes and glanced down at his
prosthetic leg in the mirror.
Insecurity, something he’d never felt before he was injured,
filled him. Social functions had turned into gruesome exercises of pity. So
he’d stopped interacting with most people. And now his brothers had ganged up
on him. Even the army counselor had told him he needed to do something to move
on. Ever since he’d come home with a missing leg, he’d lost all interest in
dating. It had taken some serious nagging to get him to relent and allow a
friend of Cal’s to hook him up.
A knock on his door sounded just as he was reaching for a
towel. “Come in.”
His brother, Calvin, gave him the once over. “You all right,
bro?”
Cal sat on Ryan’s bed as if nothing were wrong, but Ryan
knew his brother wanted to make sure he was ok after all the exercise they’d
done playing basketball. Ryan was still trying to get used to the new leg, and
this was the first time he’d played hoops with the guys since getting it.
“I’m fine.” He clenched his jaw, hoping the pain would
diminish once he soaked in hot water. At least that’s what the physical
therapist had told him. He’d rather sew his lips shut than admit to being in
pain and end up in a hospital with his mother hovering over him again.
Cal grabbed a green, squishy stress-relief ball from the
bedside table, threw it up in the air, and caught it. Then he did it again,
settling back into Ryan’s pillows. Why Ryan decided to live next door to his
brother, he had no clue.
“Was there something else?”
“So…the blind date. That’s tomorrow after your tests, huh?”
Cal tossed, caught, and squeezed the ball in his grip. The soft material made a
whining sound with each crush of the rubbery material.
“Yeah.”
His brother stared up at the ceiling and continued to
torture the squishy ball. “So…I understand you don’t want her to know the
extent of your injuries. Not backing out, are you?”
Ryan might have tried to relieve Cal if he wasn’t lying on
the bed all sweaty. “No, now get off my bed. You’re putting your funk on my
blanket.”
Cal caught the ball in his hand and smirked. “Dude,
seriously, you need to get laid. The stick up your ass needs to be removed
soon. It’s messing up your game. You’re not going to relax until you get some.
I’ve heard she’s pretty, so don’t scare her by being all grumpy like you have
been lately.” He strolled to the door. When he reached the bedroom entrance, he
turned toward Ryan. “You sure you don’t need any painkillers?”
Ryan didn’t fault his brother for his concern. They’d all
had a hard time dealing with his situation when he’d come home half dead, but
it was getting old.
“I’m good.” Inhale. Exhale. Taking slow steps and ignoring
the shooting pain, he made his way to the bathroom and shut the door.
“Call me if you need anything,” Cal shouted. Ryan heard the
stomping of his brother’s heavy steps as he headed toward the front door.
Whenever his family brought a woman around for him to meet,
all he saw was the pity in their eyes. He wanted someone who didn’t care that
he’d been injured. His biggest reason for giving a blind date a shot was to see
if there was a remote possibility that some random woman could like him even
with his disability. It was time to put it to the test.
He didn’t want to live like a hermit. Besides, it was
worrying him that he wasn’t aroused anymore. At every turn his family had tried
to set him up with single females, but all he saw were sad looks. And those sad
looks reminded him of his loss. And that shoved all thoughts of getting
personal with any of those women down the drain. That was not what he wanted in
a relationship.

Stranded Temptation
Blurb
“I’d never put you in danger.” Deepened to rough gravel, the sound of his voice made her pussy throb and blood thicken in her veins.
Somehow she knew what he said was the truth. “Kiss me, Max.”
The words were barely out of her lips when he dragged her onto his lap and their lips met in desperation. Her arms twined around his neck. Pulling him closer, she brought her chest flush to his. Heat took over every cell of her body. His kiss devoured her. Lord, the man was a kissing god. With soft strokes of his tongue, he caressed the inside of her mouth. Whimpering in the back of her throat, she moved restlessly on his lap. The long, steel length of his cock was poking at her ass. He glided his hands under her top, making her belly flesh quiver. When his warm hands touched her skin, desire increased inside her tenfold. Breaths turned to pants. Her body thrummed with arousal. She tuned everything but the sight of him out of her mind.
She pulled back and smiled. “I want you, Max.”
He frowned and took a deep breath. “Kara, you’re in shock—”
Determined, she shook her head and cut him off. “No, Max. I’m alive.”
She smiled again and pulled off her top. Her bra was now the only barrier between her breasts and his hands. Swollen into tight points, the peaks of her nipples called for his touch under the satiny material. A combination of lust, hunger, and desperation flared in his eyes. His usually light gray eyes darkened to that of a murky, stormy day.
“Fuck, Kara. I want you too, but I don’t have condoms.”
Air fought its way into her lungs. “I’m clean and on birth control.”
He continued to frown. “I’m clean too, but are you sure?”
In a smooth move worthy of any professional stripper, her hand reached behind her back, unsnapped her bra, and pulled it off. “Fuck me, Max. I want you inside me, right now.”
His hands curled around her head and held her immobile. Raw hunger made her body shudder. Their kiss turned into a greedy need to consume each other. Moisture gathered in her pussy, and an incessant throbbing took hold between her thighs. In a frantic mating, their tongues danced, rubbed, and curled over each other until passion overrode all else. Blind lust shot through her when she rocked her hips over his hard cock.
He kissed wet trails from her jaw to her breasts until he was sucking on one of her erect nipples. Her pussy clenched when he enveloped her breast with his firm lips. Soaked in her cream, her thong became a new point of friction on her swollen pussy lips. She tore at his shirt. A wanton urgency took hold of her and guided her actions. To feel his skin on hers became her only mission.
When he helped her take the shirt off, she splayed her hands over his bulging shoulders and sighed. When his warm muscles contracted, she groaned. He was a work of art. His chest was corded with muscles and bronzed to perfection. Just looking at him made her pant. Whimpers rushed past her lips when his teeth grazed her turgid nipple.
“Oh, yes. Do that again.”
Again, he sucked and then nipped at the tight bud. She moaned and pushed her chest further into his face. He released her nipple from his lips and rolled the wet tip between his finger and thumb, tweaking the sensitive flesh while his mouth latched onto the other one for a taste. She dug her nails into his shoulders, holding him in her grip while rocking her hips over his cock. Movement made her open her eyes. Max had made the seat flatten back so that it was the size of a double bed.
A smile curled her lips when she gazed into his almost-black eyes. He motioned for her to stand. Once she did, he moved his hands to her white pants and slowly pulled the linen material, along with her thong, down her legs. With every inch of skin he exposed, he placed a kiss on a body part. First it was her stomach. Then it was her hip when he lowered the material down her legs. Her knee came next and finally her calf. Afterward he kissed his way back up to her stomach. She groaned and stood in place. He licked circles on her stomach and around her belly button. He caressed her breasts, down the sides of her breasts to her waist, and squeezed the flare of her hips. She took a choppy breath. He fluttered his fingertips down from her hips toward her core, and she bit her lip to keep from moaning. When he massaged her thighs, she was ready to beg him to touch her. Before she had a chance to, he moved a hand between her legs and dipped his fingers between her waxed pussy lips.
He groaned. “Fuck, Kara. You’re so hot and wet. Is that for me, baby?”
“God, yes. Just for you.” She moaned.
Each dip of his fingers into her wet sex made her whimper louder.
He stood, and she had to tilt her head back to look him in the eye. His eyes were sexy, stormy. He put his arms around her waist and held her tight to him. Their hearts beat in a furious, identical gallop. He switched their positions and pushed her to lie on the bed.
Stranded together, their passions will
run wild.
Kara has a deep dislike for her boss, Max. She also wants him so badly it’s making her nuts. He’s a workaholic, a robot man. And he’s never shown the least bit of interest in her or anything else that wasn’t recorded in the corporate minutes. But when their plane crashes on the way to a meeting, leaving them stranded on a deserted island…just the two of them, all alone with all that ocean around them…Kara decides it’s time to start living. And by living, she means using Max for all the hot sex she’s been denied.
Max wants Kara—has wanted her for a long time. Unable to come out and cross the line between professional and personal, he makes her accompany him on business trips just to have her around. When they crash land and Kara shows him how much she wants him, he decides to quit being so professional and take the woman of his dreams. After all, what happens in the middle of nowhere, stays in the middle of nowhere. Until they’re rescued.
Back in the real world, things aren’t as easy. Kara is afraid to start a relationship with a man who completely ignored her until she took off her clothes, and Max is afraid she’ll never be able to trust him. But when someone makes it clear that Kara’s in danger, Max has more to protect than Kara’s feelings. And now that he has her, he’s not about to let her go.

Gentleness
she’d never noticed before in Max was evident in his eyes. She watched him curl
his large hand over her much smaller one. Her heart beat so loudly in her ears
she feared he might hear it. He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it.
Fire roared in her blood, and her breath hitched. He turned her hand over and
brushed a warm, firm kiss over her palm while they stared at each other.“I’d never put you in danger.” Deepened to rough gravel, the sound of his voice made her pussy throb and blood thicken in her veins.

Excerpt:
Chris was ready to kill somebody, preferably one Drex
Callum. He’d made it a point to ignore all her calls for help. She’d twice sent
a man to find him and all he’d said was, “Mr. Callum apologizes, but he is busy
at this time.” What the hell was his problem with her? He knew she was there
and now some guy had bought her for the night. But he had looked so sexy in the
tux. The tight points of her nipples ached and swelled. Disgust over her body’s
reaction to him made her growl.
She was tied to a bed for fuck’s sake. On the positive side,
at least they hadn’t stripped her of the tiny dress and her legs were still
free.
The sound of the door opening had her jerking her gaze to
the entrance. There, looking so good it should be illegal, was Drex, and he was
smiling at her.
“Oh, thank God it’s you. Hurry up and get me loose before
whoever bought me gets here.” Alarm filled her. She hadn’t finished speaking,
and he was already shaking his head in a negative.
“You know I can’t do that. We have rules here. I told you
not to come tonight. Told you not to do anything you’d regret.” He smiled,
locked the door, and then removed his tux jacket.
As usual, temper got the best of her. “I don’t regret
coming, you dick. What I regret is thinking you were here to offer some kind of
help. So…what? Are you just going to leave me tied here for some jerk to try
and fuck me? At the mercy of the sick bastard who bought me?”
Was it wrong to wish he hadn’t noticed how hard her nipples
had gotten as soon as he’d walked in the door? Fire shot through her veins at
his proprietary look. He raked his gaze up and down her body before fastening
on to hers.
“Hmm, yes. I think I will.” While watching her, he took off
his cuff links and dropped them on the dresser.
Lust shot straight to her cunt. “What…what are you doing?”
He formed his lips into a feral grin. “Undressing.” He
popped open buttons and slid the white shirt off to reveal his wide, powerful
chest. He shifted, his muscles flexing under his smooth bronzed skin. Her
fingers itched to touch. He threw his shirt to the side, which left his top
half fully revealed.
Moisture pooled in her pussy. “What…why?”
Heat pricked under her skin. Her gaze drifted to his waist,
where he was unbuckling his belt. She gulped and looked up at him. He twisted
his lips into a devilish grin. “I’m the sick bastard who bought you and the
jerk who is going to fuck you.”
Well, damn. Never in her wildest dreams had she ever come up
with this scenario. Sure, back when she’d been a teenager she’d had a stupid
crush on Drex, but then he’d turned into a jerk and she’d quickly gotten over
it. Now though, he was not acting the jerk. In fact, every deliberate move he
made only enticed her to want to know what else he planned to do.
Excitement hurled through her body. “Don’t be stupid. You
don’t even like me. Quit messing around and let me loose.” The words ended in a
small whimper as he continued to strip. Her body hummed in need the moment his
pants came off. Arousal slapped her in the gut when she saw his long, thick
erection pointing straight up.
He strolled to the bed. His muscular, powerful legs flexed
with each stride. There didn’t seem to be a single ounce of fat anywhere on
him. Unbidden thoughts of checking out his ass made her crane her neck to the
side.
“I never said I didn’t like you.” He trailed his long
fingers up her foot, calf, and higher to her thigh with every step he took, “In
fact, I want you. Have wanted you for a long time. More than want you.”
Shivers crawled up her spine. She whimpered softly. “Don’t
tease.”
He hovered above her, only inches from her face. Rugged
masculinity oozed from him. “I plan to do a lot more than just tease you.”
A quick flutter of their lips was her first taste of him. Looking
for a deeper touch, she lifted her head off the bed, but he moved his lips to
nuzzle her neck. Her lids dropped as his warm mouth trailed up her ear.
“I’m going to fuck you for all the times I’ve wanted to but
didn’t. Fuck you until I am the only man your body recognizes.”
She moaned as his words turned into images of their twined
bodies in her head.
He licked the shell of her ear, twirling his wicked tongue
in circles. “Do you want me to? Want me to fill you until you can’t see
straight?”
For the first time since she’d been an infatuated teenager,
she wanted to be his. Past her lips before her brain had enough time to stop
it, she groaned the answer. “Yes, please…I want you.”

Mr. Buff
Blurb:
Every morning, Alexandra drinks in the sexy vision of Mr.
Buff through his office window across the street. He takes his workouts
seriously, and Alexandra never misses the opportunity to see him return, sweaty
and pumped, to his office suite to shower. Turns out Andrew enjoys the view
just as much as she does and can’t take his eyes off the woman who makes his
blood roar.
But when Alexandra bumps into Mr. Buff at a club, things go from visual to physical. And much to her delight, she learns that Mr. Buff is really Mr. Dominant. She loves spending time with him and getting to know him the way nature intended, but she’s looking for more than a fling. How’s she supposed to make Mr. Buff realize he’s Mr. Right?

She loves spending time with him and getting to know him the way nature intended, but she’s looking for more than a fling. How’s she supposed to make Mr. Buff realize he’s Mr. Right?
Excerpt:
“So? What’s he
doing? Come on, come on. Stop holding out already.” The soft, feminine voice on
the other end of the line whined like a child.
Alexandra rolled her eyes and tried not to smile. Why in the world had she decided to tell Nina about Mr. Buff? Every morning, like clockwork, she’d get a call from her best friend and cousin requesting updates. Wound up and ready to pant, she looked into the office right across the street.
The large, sparkling glass windows on both buildings allowed her to view the man walking around. She drank in the sight of the large, buff body, hence the name Mr. Buff. The man definitely took his workouts to heart.
“Alex! What’s Mr. Buff doing now, chica? Tell me please, please, pretty pleeease?” Her fiery cousin, Nina, was a pain in the neck when she thought she was missing out on something good—especially information about one sexy, half-naked man, a man currently running long fingers through his impeccably cut hair.
Alex watched a few locks fall across his forehead. “Not much. He’s about to put his shirt on.”
“Crap. Listen, I have to go, but you have to record this stuff on your phone and e-mail it to me. Stop being so selfish and share. You know I don’t have a man right now. I can use all the visual stimulation I can get.”
She hung up on her cousin’s laughter and continued watching the top contestant to fulfill all her fantasies dress. Under an idyllic trance, she visualized the rest of him when he was in the shower. Excitement hurled through her at the thought of getting a peek at Mr. Buff in the wet room. A streak of unbidden desire whisked through her veins and raced down to her cunt.
Her brain, better than any digital calendar, had recorded his schedule down to the minute. Each morning, he walked into his office wearing his workout gear. In running shorts and tank top, his body glistened with perspiration. Every time she got a glimpse of all that sweat-covered brawn, her nipples pebbled.
In wide-eyed enthrallment, she watched him head into the bathroom attached to his office to shower. Every single day it was the same. He walked out in his suit pants but never the shirt. She wondered if he had some kind of conspiracy against her hormones. The display of contracting muscle made her breath hitch.
His powerful back and amazing, tight ass were sending out Morse code signals, beguiling and inciting her interest.
His white, tailored dress shirt cut the visual feast short. She had to bite back the urge to scream. Not that he would hear her, but her coworkers sure would.
Why not just go over there and ask the man out? Typically, she would have done that already. Found out his name, instead of just calling the poor, sexy, strapping creature Mr. Buff, at the very least. “Go after what you want” was her motto in every aspect of her life; she was a self-assured woman. Until recently, she didn’t lack self-confidence. Thanks to her ex, her confidence had taken a whipping some months back.
Jerk-off Jack had been cheating, and the confrontation that followed was not pretty. Questions that had never existed before rose with his words: “You’re a control freak, Alexandra. No man wants a woman telling him what to do in the sack. Sometimes I want to be the one leading. You’re too aggressive. You’re a good fuck, but not someone I could ever be with long term. I even wonder if you’re faking it at times.” Oh yeah, Jerk-off Jack had definitely let loose.
Would she be able to find a man who would want her, deal with her for who she was and not try to change her? At thirty-three she was tired of the dating scene. Was it so wrong that she wanted to meet someone and maybe settle down?
Alexandria refocused her mind, her vision still glued to Mr. Buff. Oh shit. He was watching her. Heat crawled across her skin and settled over her cheeks. Embarrassed, she gave him the usual small smile and microsecond wave.
His wicked grin turned the man from handsome to outright gorgeous when he waved back. Balling and holding papers in a death grip, she dropped her gaze. All she needed was for the man to think she had some kind of sick fetish for watching him.
Alexandra rolled her eyes and tried not to smile. Why in the world had she decided to tell Nina about Mr. Buff? Every morning, like clockwork, she’d get a call from her best friend and cousin requesting updates. Wound up and ready to pant, she looked into the office right across the street.

Chapter One
What in the hell was wrong with this picture? She was at a retreat, or what she liked to think of as a stupid idea someone with too much time had come up with to push her and her coworkers into learning to communicate better, get a feel for what each employee wanted to get out of the job, and figure out a way to provide better service…and some other crap she couldn’t remember at the moment.
Why in the world did she have to be there? She slapped her calf, killing off another mosquito. Darkness enveloped the group around the campfire, which made it easy for her glance over to the side and chug on the wine bottle, the one she had strategically placed next to the tree trunk she sat on. Everyone was so involved in “sharing” that they didn’t notice her getting drunk in the back, alone. And that was perfectly fine by her.
If only they would stop the incessant chatter already and send her off to bed, giving her some peace. But if she went to bed in her very lonely cabin, she wouldn’t be able to watch Max.
She glanced off to the side, as if admiring the scenery, and took another gulp of wine, the fruity flavor no longer bursting on her tongue but mixing with the lingering sweetness from her previous swig.
“Sabrina?” Eve’s sharp tone made her jerk to face the rest of the group. Normally she wouldn’t mind being called by her real name, though everyone outside of work knew her as Nina, but the way Eve said it, with so much severity, it made her want to wince.
“Hmm?”
The outdoors and nature did nothing to smooth out Eve’s harsh features. Nor did she look anywhere near friendly with the glare she directed toward Nina. Nina had to fight the urge to giggle every time Eve looked at her that way. Eve reminded her of Cruella de Vil.
“I asked if there was anything you’d like to add to the discussion?”
Nina’s gaze slid past Eve to lock on Max. His lips quirked, almost like he knew exactly what she’d been doing. Too bad he was so far away and there were all those people there, or she’d finally do something about the attraction that didn’t let her sleep. She was ready to finally give in to temptation and have her way with him. Screw the fact that they worked together. Or better said, she worked for him.
“No, Eve. I think what you have shared covers all the important points we’re here to discuss.” Lie. She had no clue what Eve had been saying.
Eve’s frown smoothed, and she lifted her chin. “Thank you, Sabrina.” She turned back to the others, effectively dismissing her. “As I was saying…”
Nina shut Eve’s low, droning voice out of her mind again and peeked down a passageway between the trees. There was enough light from the campsite, she could just make out her way down the path. Curiosity got a hold of her. She stood on wobbly legs and blinked. The group spun out of focus for a second.
“Sabrina?”
Nina took a few steps toward the dimly lit passage in the woods before she turned to Max’s enquiring voice. “I’m just going to the ladies room for a moment.” She pointed in the direction of the trees.
“Wait! That’s not…”
She ignored Max’s call to her and strolled off, breaking twigs and dead leaves with each step. Mosquitoes nibbled on her legs, each bite a constant reminder that she wished she was home in her bed, relaxing, or at least with someone that would help her fight the arousal shooting through her whenever she glanced at Max. But she’d broken up with her last boyfriend a while back. Since he didn’t get the message that she was no longer interested, she had stopped going to the places she might encounter him.
With each step she took, the sound of the river beckoned her in its direction. Her foot caught, and she tripped on a branch. She squealed as the earth tilted in front of her. Rocky ground rushed up to meet her face.
A strong pair of hands grabbed her by the waist and hauled her backward. “I got you.” Max’s deep voice caressed her ear while he helped her straighten.
Swooshing from water streaming nearby and crickets, somewhere in the vicinity, were the only sounds to be heard. Each noise drove home the fact she was outdoors and anyone could come by, not that she cared.
He shifted her in his arms until she faced him, her front leaning heavily into his muscled body. She sighed, glancing up into his shadowed face. Not that she needed light to know what his delectable square jaw looked like. Or how brilliant his blue eyes were. He leaned back into a thick tree trunk, pulling her with him.
Slow caresses trailed down her back, making her shiver and her blood thicken in her veins. With each intimate touch, her body throbbed. It was time to stop torturing herself. She couldn’t fight her body any longer.
“I think you’ve had a few too many, beautiful. Let’s get you back to your cabin.”
“No.” She lifted on the tips of her trainers, curled her hands around his neck, and pulled his head down to her. “Now stop torturing me, and kiss me, damn it.”
He groaned softly. “Sabrina, you’ve definitely had too much to drink. Sneaking in wine was not part of the agenda, you know.” He stroked down her spine to the curve of her ass and palmed her cheeks.
She huddled closer, cradling his erection in the juncture of her thighs. “I know it wasn’t, but Eve is boring. And it’s not that I’ve had too much too much to drink. I’ve just had enough, Max. I’m tired of fighting this. I want you.”
“Baby, you hate my guts.” He chuckled, lowered, and dropped a kiss on her nose.
Arousal gathered inside her, heating her blood by more degrees than she cared to admit. “No. I don’t hate you. I just don’t like that I want you so much.” She kissed his jaw, loving the sound of his sharp inhale when she licked his neck.
“Sabrina…”
Breaths mingled, gazes connected, and wet heat dripped from her sex. It was pure torture to have his sexy mouth so close and not get a taste. “Just kiss me, Max. I need you.”
Peaks of tension zigzagged inside her and made her shudder. He held her neck with one hand, tilted her head back, and swooped down for a kiss. Potent need, unlike any she’d ever felt before, possessed her. She whimpered into the sensual kiss. Each swipe of his tongue over hers added kindling to the explosions going off inside her. She raked her nails down his T-shirt, over his hard-muscled chest, and to his jeans. “Fuck me.”
He drew back from their kiss, ending the twining of their tongues. A scowl, deeply etched on his face, showed his disbelief at her words. But this time she wasn’t going with logic. She decided to give in to what her body desired. And it desired Max.
“Sabr—” One soft moan left his lips when she gripped his cock over his jeans.
“Max, this isn’t a game. I want to see you.” She panted, unbuckling his belt. “I want to touch you.” Excitement rushed through her, urging her to unzip his jeans. “I want to taste you…”

“Lucky!”
Luciana whipped her head toward the familiar voices of Alex and Nina. She smiled wide when she spotted the two women, past the masses of travelers by the luggage pickup, heading in her direction.
She rushed forward and enveloped both in a group hug. “I missed you so much!”
“We missed you too, prima!” Alex’s soft voice whispered in her ear.
She pulled back. Both women wore fun, colorful outfits and sandals. Like her, they were on the curvaceous side, voluptuous, with full bodies, as her mom liked to say. All three also had long dark hair and the cinnamon-toned skin that came from their Latin heritage. Only Lucky had the blue-black hair. She was also a few years younger than Alex and older than Nina. It made her the cream in their cookie sandwich.
Fascinated with how dazzling both women looked, she gaped openly at them. If they radiated any more happiness, she’d need sunglasses. Alex glowed with her pregnancy. Meanwhile, Nina’s eyes danced, filled with joy. Her heart ached that she’d been missing out on the comings and goings of her best friends.
“You look about ready to burst with joy—especially you, Alex.” She grinned.
Nina laughed. “Not so much what we’re doing, but what is being done to us.” She winked. “Tu sabes.”
Yeah, she knew, all right. Those sparkling dark eyes of theirs told enough of the story for her not to wonder. And if what she’d heard about Alex’s husband and Nina’s fiancé was true, they were both getting done quite well. Sadly, Lucky had been very unlucky in that side of her life. Her last relationship had gone down the drain when she’d mentioned family and babies to her ex. Her chest hurt whenever she remembered the way things had ended. Shit had hit the fan in the worst possible moment. Shaking her mind out of the pity party it tended to head to, she smiled at the women.
“Come on, chicas. Let’s get out of here so you can both fill me in on the wedding and what I’m supposed to do to make sure it goes off without a hitch.” She tugged on the plastic handle of her suitcase and headed for the exit, zigzagging her way around the bodies rushing to enter the terminal.
Sweat formed and dripped down her spine the moment they hit the outdoors. Having come from Florida and the warm beach weather, it was odd to have a higher temperature meet her in New York.
Nina winced. “I know. This weather sucks.” She slipped on her sunglasses. “I should have just picked a date in the winter to get married, but I really didn’t want to wait that long.”
Alex rolled her eyes and pointed to her protruding baby bump, covered by her pretty purple tank top. “You should have. I would have loved to fit into a regular dress instead of a muumuu.”
“Honey, you’re going to look gorgeous in your dress.” Nina grinned.
“Gorgeous?” Alex lifted her brows high, disbelief written all over her flushed face. “I’ll look like the sun—one big yellow sphere.”
Lucky choked on a giggle. “Alex!”
“It’s true.” She pouted. “I don’t care what you say. I look terrible in all that yellow. Big and yellow. Lovely combination.”
“It’s gold, Alex.” Nina’s voice sounded tired. As if they’d had that conversation multiple times before.
“Gold, yellow, does it matter?” Alex frowned, as she pulled a bottle of water from her handbag and sipped.
“But Alex, you can—”
“Stop telling me I can wear it again.” She groaned. “I don’t think I want to look like the sun in the future.”
Lucky grinned. It was nice to be back with family. She was already enjoying the silly banter between her cousins. They made their way to Nina’s navy-blue sedan. She followed behind Nina and Alex. “So, when do I get to meet the groom?”
Belts snapped into place as Nina started the car. “Tomorrow night. We’re having a private party at Come Again. You already met Andrew at Alex’s wedding. This time you’ll meet my honey, Maxwell, and his best friend, JT—who’s also his best man.”
The car took off suddenly, causing Lucky to jerk in her seat. She bit back the usual “slow-down” retort she used on her sister. It wasn’t that Nina was a bad driver. Lucky just didn’t like speed. Or cars.
“Tonight is just us girls.” Nina cheered.
“Ugh…I hate to be the party pooper here, but I am just not up for late nights anymore,” Alex whined. She lifted her long hair into a bun and used a clip to hold it in place.
“Aw. Poor baby.” Nina cooed. “Don’t worry, hon. You are excused and may go home to rest those swollen little feet.”
Lucky sat back and retrieved a notebook. Time to take down notes on her plans for the wedding.
“Oh, Luckyyy.”
She met Nina’s smiling gaze in the rear view mirror.
“Tonight is going to be a super special surprise. I’m taking you somewhere awesome.”
“A club?” She wasn’t sure she was up to the clubbing scene just yet.
“Nope. A private event. And that’s all I’m going to tell you.”
Lucky opened her mouth to ask further questions, but Alex cut her off. “Don’t even bother asking anything, chica. She’s already said it’s a surprise. She’s obsessed with those things.”
“Hey! I will have you know, you all love my surprises.” She clicked on the radio. The sounds of their favorite ’80s salsa songs filled the car, and they all started singing along, completely out of tune. She amended her previous thought. It wasn’t just nice to be back with her family. It was awesome.
